EWC codes (also called List of Waste or LoW codes) are 6-digit codes from the European Waste Catalogue that classify every type of waste. They are required on every Waste Transfer Note in the UK under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011.
Why do they matter?
Using the wrong EWC code on a waste transfer note can result in fines of up to £5,000. From October 2026, DEFRA's digital waste tracking system will require accurate EWC codes for every transfer — no more guessing.
