What is a driver compliance card?
Environment Agency inspectors can stop any vehicle they suspect is carrying waste. Under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the driver must be able to produce evidence that the carrier is registered and that the load has a valid waste transfer note. A compliance card is a simple way to give drivers the information they need on hand without having to remember licence numbers or office phone numbers under pressure.
Is this legally required?
No. There is no legal requirement to carry a compliance card. The legal obligation is to have a valid carrier licence and to produce a waste transfer note on request. A card is a practical aid, not a compliance document in itself. Think of it as a cheat sheet for drivers who don't remember every licence number off by heart.
Practical notes
- Print two-sided if you want to add a hazardous waste emergency number, the carrier's insurance reference, or internal notes.
- Laminate the card. Drivers drop them, spill tea on them, leave them on dashboards in the sun. A laminated card survives all three.
- Update the card whenever your licence renews (every 3 years for upper-tier).
- Keep a spare in the office. Replacing a lost card should take 30 seconds.
Every WTN App note has licence and carrier details embedded. Drivers don't need to remember anything.
